What is Urban Acres?
Urban Acres is an urban agriculture and neighborhood revitalization initiative of CBCDC that transforms underutilized spaces into thriving community assets. Through fresh food access, environmental stewardship, education, and volunteer engagement, Urban Acres is helping build a healthier and more connected Eastside.

Our Story
Growing food, fostering connections, and strengthening Wilmington’s Eastside since 2010.
Urban Acres began with a simple goal: to increase access to fresh, healthy food in Wilmington’s Eastside. Over the years, that mission has expanded into a broader effort to improve community health, support environmental stewardship, and create spaces where neighbors can learn, grow, and connect.

2010
Urban Acres Begins
Urban Acres launched as a produce stand outside Central Baptist Church, providing residents with access to fresh fruits and vegetables in a community with limited healthy food options.

2012
Church Street Community Garden
Urban Acres expanded with the creation of the Church Street Community Garden, transforming community space into a place where residents could grow food, learn gardening skills, and gather with neighbors.

2016
Prescription Produce Program
In partnership with ChristianaCare, Urban Acres operated produce stands outside area hospitals and medical offices through the Prescription Produce Program. The initiative connected patients and community members with fresh produce while promoting healthy eating and wellness.

2020
Meeting Community Needs During COVID-19
When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted access to food and services, Urban Acres adapted its programming to meet the moment. Food access efforts shifted to produce delivery and expanded community support, helping residents access fresh food during a challenging time.

2026
Certified Wildlife Habitat
Through its partnership with the Delaware Nature Society, the Church Street Community Garden was recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat, reflecting Urban Acres’ commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable gardening practices.

Growing the Future
Urban Acres is working toward opening a neighborhood storefront that will further expand access to fresh food, educational programming, and community wellness initiatives.
